Need to drive a car to its safety inspection before it has permanent plates? Maryland offers a one-time 30-day temporary registration.
The MVA offers a 30-day temporary registration when you need plates to get the vehicle safety inspected. Private tag and title agencies can also issue them.
You only get one. The MVA says only one 30-day temporary registration may be issued, so apply when the car is actually ready for inspection. If it needs repairs first, the MVA says you can title the vehicle now and apply for the temporary registration later.
What the MVA asks for
- A completed Temporary Inspection Waiver (form VR-129)
- Maryland insurance on the vehicle
- Your title paperwork, if you are titling the car at the same time
- Payment for the temporary registration fee and any title fees and taxes due
Once the car passes inspection, you apply for regular one- or two-year plates.
