Returning your license plates
Sold the car, moved away, or taking a vehicle off the road? Maryland plates go back to the MVA, and the receipt matters.
In Maryland, the plates stay with the seller, not the car. The MVA says you must return plates you no longer need, unless you're moving them to another vehicle you own. Not returning them can lead to insurance violation penalties or other fees.
Return the plates before you cancel the insurance, and keep your receipt. The MVA says returning plates is what stops the insurance and registration requirements.
What the MVA asks for
- Both plates, front and back, removed from the vehicle
- A completed Tag Return Form (VR-027)
- Registration Plate Refund Application (VR-021), only if your registration runs more than 12 months past the return and you want a possible refund
The MVA accepts plates at a branch counter (printed receipt), in a 24-hour drop box, or by mail (certified mail recommended). Receipts for drop-box returns can be downloaded in myMVA after about 72 business hours.
