What tag & title costs in Maryland
Your bill at a tag and title agency has two parts: the state's MVA fees, which are the same everywhere, and the agency's own service fee, which varies by location.
State fees (same at every agency)
These go to the state no matter where you get your tags done:
- Title fee: $200 for most vehicles.
- Titling tax: 6.5% of the vehicle's fair market value, charged once when you title it (not on renewals).
- Registration fee: based on the vehicle's weight class, includes a $40/year EMS surcharge. The exact amount depends on your vehicle's weight, so check the current tiers on the MVA's official fee page.
- Electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles: an additional annual surcharge applies on top of the above.
State fees change from time to time. The MVA's own page is the source of truth — we link to it above rather than guess at numbers that could be out of date.
Agency service fees
On top of state fees, each private agency charges its own service fee for handling the paperwork and standing in line at the MVA's system on your behalf. This varies by agency and by transaction, and we don't have confirmed figures yet — as Maya calls agencies to verify their listings, typical service fees will get added here.
How to avoid surprises
Ask for the full price before they start, including any fee for returning old plates or handling a title held by a lienholder.
