Renewing your registration
Before you drive anywhere: most renewals can be done online with the MVA, any time of day.
The MVA offers online renewal 24/7, with the registration card and stickers mailed to you. Your renewal notice also says whether you can renew by mail. Online, you pay only the state's charges, with no agency service fee.
When an agency can make sense: you want in-person help, or you'd rather not wait for the mail. Some agencies advertise renewals on the spot, so ask whether they print stickers while you wait.
The MVA says you must renew in person if your vehicle has unresolved issues, and insurance problems need fixing before you renew. Ask an agency whether it can help with your specific issue before you go.
What the MVA asks for
- Your renewal notice (or plate number and vehicle details)
- Active Maryland insurance on the vehicle
- Any flag or issue on the vehicle record cleared first (your renewal notice tells you)
- Payment for the renewal fee
