Replacing a lost or damaged title
Lost, stolen or damaged title? A duplicate has the same legal standing as the original.
The MVA lets owners request a duplicate title online through myMVA (which it calls the fastest option for most people), at a branch by appointment, or by mail. It has also set up a process for tag and title agents to request duplicate titles electronically.
Is the problem a mistake, not a lost title? If you have the title but the name, address or vehicle details are wrong, the MVA says to correct the title instead of requesting a duplicate.
What the MVA asks for
- Only an owner or an authorized person can request one, with proper documentation
- If a lien is still listed, the lienholder may need to be involved
- A fee applies
- The duplicate is mailed to the address on record, so update your address first if you've moved
